Udzungwa Mountains National Park doesn't have the open plains or the big cats of Mikumi and Ruaha — and that's exactly the point. This is Tanzania's hiking park, and for many of our guests, it's the most memorable stop on their trip.
Why Udzungwa Is Different
Instead of game drives, Udzungwa is explored on foot along forest trails. The biodiversity here is exceptional — several primate species found nowhere else on Earth, over 400 bird species, and a canopy so dense it feels like a different country entirely.
Popular Trails
- Sanje Waterfalls Trail — a moderate half-day hike to one of Tanzania's most spectacular waterfalls, with sweeping views over the Kilombero Valley
- Prince Bernhard Waterfall Trail — shorter and gentler, good for travelers short on time or stamina
- Mwanihana Peak — a serious multi-day trek for experienced hikers wanting to reach the park's highest point
What to Expect
Trails can be steep, humid and occasionally slippery, especially after rain. Good hiking boots and a walking pole make a real difference. Bring insect repellent and expect the forest canopy to keep temperatures noticeably cooler than the open plains.
Pairing Udzungwa With Wildlife Parks
Most guests combine Udzungwa with Mikumi or Nyerere rather than visiting it alone — our Mikumi + Udzungwa Adventure and Southern Tanzania Classic itineraries are both built around this pairing, giving you wildlife, waterfalls and mountains in one seamless trip.
